Merlin Entertainments is Europe’s largest entertainments company. They operate 124 attractions in 25 countries across four continents. These include some local favourites; Thorpe Park, Legoland, Chessington World of Adventures Resort, London Eye, Madame Tussauds and SEA LIFE.

topright were asked to illustrate a wall for Weymouth SEA LIFE that would highlight the plastic pollution problem in the world’s oceans. The illustration would be displayed in the entrance to their ‘New Ideas Zone’. Here, guests are given a first look experience at three new features and are then asked to give their opinions on them. The feedback dictates which concepts should be further developed and rolled out globally.

The illustration needed to be age-appropriate, colourful and engaging. It had to catch the eyes of passing guests but most importantly had to capture their imaginations, be hard-hitting and educate its viewers. By illustrating a selection of underwater creatures of which some are endangered (like the sea turtle) showing sorrowful expressions, surrounded by bottles, plastic bags and a huge mass of floating plastic was a clever way to help increase understanding and especially encourage the younger viewers to make a change for the future.
